Using AFP and bundling could save 13%-20%, bridge study reveals

October 21, 2013

Ontario Good Roads Association and RCCAO released a report which analyzed bridge and culvert structures in Wellington County to determine whether AFP and project bundling might be worthwhile.  The study was carried out by MMM Group and financially supported by MTO. County of Wellington Bridge Study imageIt found that AFP approaches should be contemplated by smaller/rural municipalities that might have many aging bridges but do not necessarily have the resources to address the rehabilitation and repair backlog.  Based on the analysis, MMM conservatively estimated that applying AFP delivery methods can achieve savings in the order of 13% to 20%, in addition to the benefits of accelerated construction. Bundling this work geographically will increase the size of contracts (e.g., $50 million threshold) so that local contractors have the ability to standardize operations and apply innovation.
